What Are Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are non-surgical injection treatments designed to reduce wrinkles, restore fullness, and enhance facial features.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in your skin responsible for hydration, elasticity, and volume. As we age, HA levels diminish, leading to wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin. Restylane fillers replenish HA, delivering a youthful, refreshed appearance.

How Do Restylane & Juvederm Dermal Fillers Work?
Restylane and Juvederm are renowned for their advanced formulations, both utilizing a clear gel made from stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA). This innovative technology mimics the body’s natural HA, ensuring smooth, natural-looking results. Restylane was the first non-animal stabilized HA filler approved by the US FDA, setting the stage for modern dermal fillers, while Juvederm has become a trusted name for its versatility and long-lasting outcomes. Together, these brands have revolutionized aesthetic treatments, with Restylane achieving over 65 million applications worldwide and Juvederm equally celebrated for its transformative results.

Dermal Fillers (Juvederm or Restylane) –
Frequently Asked Questions
Curious about dermal fillers? Below are answers to common questions about Juvederm® and Restylane® treatments at Refresh Medical.
What are dermal fillers, and what do they treat?
Dermal fillers are injectable gels—most commonly made with hyaluronic acid (a substance your body naturally produces)—that add volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. Fillers are often used to soften smile lines, restore cheek volume, refine the jawline and chin, and enhance lips while maintaining a natural look.
What’s the difference between Juvederm and Restylane?
Both are trusted, FDA-approved filler families, but they have different formulations and textures. Some are better for structure and lift (cheeks, chin, jawline), while others are better for softer movement and refinement (lips, fine lines). Your provider will choose the best product based on your anatomy, goals, and desired look.
Will dermal fillers look natural?
Yes—when placed with skill and intention. At Refresh Medical, the goal is a balanced, natural-looking enhancement that fits your facial features, not an “overfilled” look.
How long do dermal fillers last?
It depends on the product used, the area treated, and your metabolism. Many fillers last 6–18 months, and some can last longer. Your provider will set realistic expectations during your consultation.
Is the treatment painful?
Most clients say it’s very tolerable. Many filler products include lidocaine for comfort, and we can use additional numbing options—especially for more sensitive areas like the lips.
Is there downtime after filler injections?
There’s usually minimal downtime, but you may experience temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising. Many people return to normal plans the same day, though it’s smart to avoid scheduling big events immediately after in case bruising occurs.
When will I see results?
You’ll typically see results right away, but mild swelling can make the area look a bit fuller at first. Final results generally settle in over 1–2 weeks.
What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?
Common areas include:
- Lips
- Cheeks
- Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
- Marionette lines
- Chin and jawline
- Under-eye hollows (in appropriate candidates)
Your provider will recommend what’s best for your face and goals.
What should I avoid before and after dermal fillers?
To help reduce bruising and swelling, it’s commonly recommended to avoid alcohol and certain blood-thinning medications/supplements before treatment when medically appropriate. After treatment, avoid heavy exercise for the rest of the day and follow your provider’s aftercare guidance.
How do I know how much filler I need?
It depends on your starting point, goals, and whether you want subtle refinement or more noticeable contouring. During your consultation, we’ll create a plan based on facial balance and natural proportions—not a one-size-fits-all “number of syringes.”
